llms.txt is a proposed convention: a Markdown file at the root of your domain that tells AI systems, in plain language, what your site is and where the important pages are. Think robots.txt, but for meaning rather than permission. Adding llms.txt to a Shopify store takes about an hour. Whether it's worth the hour depends on expectations, so let's set them honestly first.
What llms.txt does for a store
- Corrects the model's facts. Founding year, where you make things, shipping regions, return window, materials — stated once, unambiguously.
- Points crawlers at the pages that matter. Your best guide pages, comparison pages and hero products, instead of leaving the crawler to infer from a 1,000-product grid.
- Reduces hallucinations about you. In audits we regularly see AI answers invent product names for a brand. A manifest with real product names gives the model something to copy instead of imagine.
What it does not do: substitute for product schema, earn you citations, or make a grid page quotable. Do those first; add this after.

How to serve it on Shopify
Shopify doesn't let you drop arbitrary files at the domain root, so you need one of two routes.
Option A — theme asset + redirect (simplest). Upload llms.txt under Content → Files (or as a theme asset), copy its CDN URL, then add a URL redirect from /llms.txtto that URL in Online Store → Navigation → URL redirects. Crawlers follow the 301. The downside: the final URL is on Shopify's CDN, not your domain.
Option B — alternate page template (serves on your domain). Create templates/page.llms.liquid containing only your manifest inside a {% layout none %} template, create a page using that template with the handle llms, then redirect /llms.txt → /pages/llms. The content type will be HTML rather than text/plain, which most crawlers tolerate; if yours doesn't, use Option A.
{%- comment -%} templates/page.llms.liquid {%- endcomment -%}
{% layout none %}{{ page.content | strip_html }}Whichever you choose, also link the file from theme.liquidso crawlers that don't probe the root can still find it:
<link rel="alternate" type="text/markdown" href="/llms.txt" title="llms.txt">How to check it's working
- Open
yourstore.com/llms.txtin a private window — it should load in one hop. - Ask an AI assistant a brand-name question a month later and compare the facts it states with your manifest.
- Re-run the free audit; hallucination flags on brand-name queries should drop.
Conclusion
llms.txt for Shopify is an hour of work with a modest, honest upside: fewer wrong facts about you, and a clear map for crawlers that use it. Put it last on the list — after the five fixes that move AI Overview visibility — and keep it current.
